AEEP Energy Talks: From ACS to COP28: Unlocking Opportunities for a Synergetic Africa-EU Climate and Energy Future
The Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) is hosting the 12th instalment of its Energy Talks on 8 November , 2023, from 11:00 to 12:30 CET (13:00-14:30 EAT) will explore the theme “From ACS to COP28: Unlocking Opportunities for a Synergetic Africa-EU Climate and Energy Future.” The webinar will facilitate a dialogue between African and European stakeholders in the lead up to the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28), which will be held on 30 November – 12 December in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The Africa Climate Summit provided a platform for exploring innovative solutions for attracting investments, enabling technology exchange, enhancing capabilities, and positioning African nations as pioneers in sustainable development and climate action. Leading African nations in the energy transition showcased their models, providing guidance to other countries seeking sustainable energy pathways. The EU actively collaborates with the COP Presidency and countries like Kenya to secure global endorsement for tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency improvements by 2030. Significant billion-dollar pledges from countries like Germany, Denmark, and the UK, along with funds from the African Development Bank, underscored the commitment to combat climate change and climate adaptation. Moving ahead, Africa should continue to advocate for ambitious climate and energy results at COP28.
The 12th AEEP Energy Talks will feature opening remarks by Dr. Kamugisha Kazaura, Director of Infrastructure & Energy, African Union Commission, and Mr. Stefano Signore, Head of Unit DG INTPA F1 Climate Change and Sustainable Energy, European Commission. Panellists include:
– Syrine El Abed, Africa Programme Officer, East and Central Africa, International Energy Agency (IEA)
– Kandeh K. Yumkella, Ambassador and Co-Chair on Energy at the Africa-Europe Foundation (AEF)
– Glenn Pearce Oroz Senior Director, International Relations & Special Projects, Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL)
– Jabri Ibrahim, Africa Special Programmes Lead, High – Level Climate Champions
The event will be moderated by AEEP Head of Secretariat, Johan van den Berg, and will conclude with a summary of key takeaways, underscoring the pivotal role of Africa and Europe in shaping discussions at the upcoming 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in the UAE.
