2010: First AEEP High Level Meeting (Vienna, Austria)

The First High-Level Meeting took place on 14-15 September 2010, in Vienna, and was convened to discuss energy access, energy security and renewable energy. The meeting was co-organised by the African Union Commission, European Commission, Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, Austria, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Germany, and by the Government of Mauritius. This High-Level Meeting brought together more than 300 participants from both continents, including high-level decision-makers, key energy stakeholders and members of civil society.

At the event participants endorsed the Declaration of the First High-Level Meeting of the AEEP, consisting of the Political Targets, the AEEP’s Renewable Energy Cooperation Programme (RECP), as well as the AEEP Road Map. The Declaration also emphasised the commitment to strengthen the dialogue on energy issues at multiple levels, and to mobilise adequate resources for the implementation of the objectives of the AEEP.To achieve the outlined objectives by 2020, a series of concrete, realistic and measurable political targets (the 2020 Targets) was agreed by EU and African ministers at the AEEP’s First High Level Meeting in 2010 in Vienna.
