2012: First AEEP Stakeholder Forum (Cape Town, South Africa)

The First Stakeholder Forum of the Africa-EU Energy Partnership took place from 9-10 May 2012 in Cape Town, South Africa. The aim of the Forum was to achieve progress on the AEEP 2020 Targets in the fields of renewable energy and energy efficiency, energy access, and energy security, with a focus on renewable energy. The Forum brought together some 250 representatives from government, civil society, research and the private sector, including financial institutions. Together they explored how to enhance synergies and how to address barriers to investment in the energy sector.

With its focus on stakeholders from the private sector, civil society and research, the Forum was help in the spirit of: “Three stakeholder groups, two continents, one joint responsibility”.

Government and the wider public sector were also strongly represented, and deeply engaged in the suggestions and proposals discussed. The Forum was hosted by the Department of Energy of South Africa, in collaboration with the AEEP Co-Chairs. The European Commission played a major role in support of the Co-Chairs.
