European Financial Flows to SDG7 in Africa – Fourth Edition
The Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) sets ambitious targets for global energy development, with the aim to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all by 2030. Progress towards SDG7 is directly linked to the scale and effectiveness of finance and investments that are dedicated to this goal.
This fourth edition of AEEP’s flagship report on European Financial Flows to SDG7 in Africa provides a comprehensive overview of how SDG7 is being financed across the African continent, with a specific focus on European contributions. Drawing on a decade of data (2014-2023), the report provides a datadriven analysis of the evolving financial landscape of SDG7, providing insights on financing approaches and instruments, and highlights remaining gaps and challenges.
Building on previous editions, the report provides detailed analysis of European contributions to SDG7 in Africa and contextualises this effort within the international development finance landscape. To provide the most comprehensive picture of the SDG7 financing landscape, the report also examines mobilised private investments and provides an overview of African government’s own energy financing. Finally, the report outlines tangible progress achieved on SDG7 through these financial flows and highlights remaining needs and pathways to accelerate progress.
