AEEP FORUM 2022: Advancing the Green Gateway Between Africa and Europe – Seizing COP27 for energy access and climate stability

Thriving Political Dialogue

Africa and Europe have built a fruitful energy partnership that works closely together to realise access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. To further align on the shared priorities between both continents, the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP)  will convene the second edition of the AEEP Forum on  7 September to discuss “Advancing the Green Gateway Between Africa and Europe – Seizing COP27 for energy access and climate stability”.

The half-day event will bring together important stakeholders from the energy and climate sectors to discuss how to converge bicontinental energy ambitions through COP27 and beyond. Participants will be able to engage on key questions on how to realise future energy systems in Africa and Europe that will allow human prosperity in a climate-compatible way. The Forum will include an interactive panel on how to tie together the ambitions of the Agenda 2063, the Paris Agreement, and the Africa – EU Green Energy Initiative. Speakers include

H.E. Birgitte Markussen, Ambassador, Head of the EU Delegation to the African Union.

H.E. Dr Amani Abou-Zeid, Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, African Union Commission.

Dr Kandeh Yumkella, Co-Chair of the Africa Europe Foundation Strategy Group on Energy.

Mr Dimitris Papastefanakis, Team Lead, EU Technical Assistance Facility (EU TAF).

Mr Callixte Kambanda, Manager for Energy Policy, African Development Bank (AfDB).

Two parallel round table discussions, in English and French, will convene representatives from policy making, civil society, youth, women, industry, finance, and academia to discuss different aspects of the African energy transition and how to advance an African energy masterplan under the Continental Power System Masterplan (CMP) and African Single Electricity Market (AfSEM).

The Forum will also offer participants the opportunity to engage with leading initiatives working towards the African energy transition through virtual booths and thematic exchanges covering key themes such as green infrastructure, financing, green hydrogen andbicontinental climate ambitions.

The outcomes of the AEEP Forum will feed into a broader process of engagement on energy in Africa and will inform the AEEP’s work to prepare for COP27. As such, the AEEP Forum will help shape the future focus of Africa and Europe’s partnership and collaboration on energy and climate.
