AEEP Energy Talks: Rolling out Africa’s Continental Masterplan at Scale: The Role of Energy Tendering Systems

Integrated Dialogue

The 16th AEEP Energy Talks on 11 September 2024 (11:00-13:00 CET/12:00-14:00 EAT) will delve into the topic of “Rolling out Africa´s Continental Masterplan at Scale: The Role of Energy Tendering Systems”. The webinar will examine the role of energy tendering systems in Africa’s energy landscape, highlighting their growing importance in the continent’s pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.

Africa’s energy tendering systems expedite renewable energy deployment, promote competition and innovation, and advance new energy technology. They select the most efficient and cost-effective projects, attracting private investment and reducing technology costs. These auctions align with environmental goals and market demand, ensuring transparent procurement and merit-based awards, enhancing sector credibility. Focusing on solar, wind, and hydropower, they harness Africa’s vast resources. This approach supports Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7), increasing energy access, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and fostering sustainable economic growth.

A report titled “Driving Growth: Effective Renewable Energy Tendering,” by the University of Cape Town’s Power Futures Lab, GET.transform, and the World Bank’s SRMI, highlights renewable energy auctions as vital for boosting renewables, competition, and project success. It emphasises the need for substantial investment and tailored strategies to address Africa’s power shortages. The report examines the interplay of country policies, programme design, and project factors, offering valuable recommendations for governments, policy-makers, and industry stakeholders on successful auction practices and strategies.

The 16th AEEP Energy Talks will highlight the role of Africa’s energy tendering systems in accelerating renewable energy deployment and fostering competition and innovation. The event will delve into best practices for selecting efficient and cost-effective projects, attracting private investment, and ensuring transparent procurement processes.
