African Continental Energy Strategies and Goals

Capacitating Joint Action

Several initiatives are reshaping the energy landscape in Africa and bringing the continent closer to affordable and clean energy. By providing capacity support to the African Union Commission and the African Union Development Agency, the Africa-EU Energy Partnership actively assists in the implementation of some of them, such as the continental initiatives Africa Single Electricity Market (AfSEM) and the Continental Power Systems Masterplan (CMP).

Implementing AfSEM will pave the way for one of the largest electricity markets in the world, covering the African Union’s 55 Member States and a population of more than 1.3 billion. The aim is to harmonise regulatory frameworks and integrate generation, transmission, and distribution masterplans. AfSEM is supported by the CMP. Learn more here.

The CMP is expected to create the framework conditions that will allow countries to trade electricity to leverage national and regional surpluses with deficits through cross-border exchanges and inter-power pool trade. Learn more here.
