The Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) extends a warm welcome to Ms. Lerato D. Mataboge, who has been appointed as the new Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy at the African Union Commission (AUC). Her appointment signifies a pivotal moment for Africa as it continues to strive towards enhancing energy access, promoting renewable energy solutions, and strengthening energy infrastructure across the continent.

Ms. Mataboge brings over two decades of experience in trade, investment facilitation, and policy development to her new role. Prior to her appointment, she served as the Deputy Director-General for Export Promotion, Development, and Outward Investments at South Africa’s Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition (DTIC). In this capacity, she provided strategic support and advice on engaging global stakeholders to foster economic growth.

Ms. Mataboge also founded and led Trade Invest Africa, an initiative aimed at creating sustainable partnerships with the private sector to enhance intra-African trade and investment. Her diplomatic experience includes serving as the Minister Counsellor for Economic and Commercial Affairs at the South African Embassy in Washington, D.C., where she managed economic relations and facilitated market access for South African enterprises.

In her new role as Commissioner, Ms. Mataboge will oversee various infrastructure and energy initiatives aimed at addressing challenges related to energy access, reliability, and sustainability. These initiatives are crucial to the African Union’s vision of providing affordable, clean, and sustainable energy for all. The AEEP looks forward to strengthening its collaboration with the AUC under Ms. Mataboge’s leadership. Building on the solid foundation already established, the partnership aims to support Africa’s energy agenda and contribute to the continent’s sustainable development goals.

Ms. Mataboge’s appointment follows the conclusion of Dr. Amani Abou-Zeid’s tenure as the previous Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy. Dr. Abou-Zeid’s leadership was instrumental in advancing energy and infrastructure projects across Africa, and her contributions have had a lasting impact on the continent’s development.

The AEEP expresses deep appreciation for Dr. Abou-Zeid’s efforts and looks forward to continued collaboration with Ms. Mataboge and the AUC. Together, they aim to drive Africa’s energy transition, tackle energy poverty, and ensure a sustainable, equitable, and inclusive energy future for all.
