AEEP Energy Talks: COP27 Review – Recalibrating Africa-EU Energy Partnership Towards Accelerated Implementation

Thriving Political Dialogue

The eighth AEEP Energy Talks will take place on 6 December, 11:00 – 12:30 (CET). The webinar will explore the energy outcomes from COP27 and the opportunities they bring to recalibrate the energy partnership between Africa and Europe.

On 7-18 November, key climate and energy actors from around the globe convened for the 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) in Sharm al Sheikh, Egypt. COP27 was an opportunity to unite African voices and showcase the continents’ climate action through a variety of announcements.

These included announcements of additional investments within the  Africa-Europe Investment Package as part of the EU’s Global Gateway Strategy, which aims to support Africa for a strong, inclusive, green and digital recovery and transformation. The conference also included breakthrough agreements to provide loss and damage funding for vulnerable countries hit hard by climate disasters. The COP27 Egyptian Presidency launched the Africa Just and Affordable Energy Transition Initiative (AJAETI), which will offer technical and policy support to facilitate affordable energy for at least 300 million people in Africa by 2027. As the conference closed, the UNFCCC concluded that limiting global warming to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels requires “rapid, deep and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions” by 2030.

The AEEP is convening its eighth Energy Talks to discuss these and other key energy outcomes from COP27 and how they can recalibrate the energy partnership between Africa and Europe towards accelerated implementation. Speakers include:

Dr Kamugisha Kazaura, Director Infrastructure and Energy, African Union Commission

Mr Stefano Signore Head of Unit DG INTPA European Commission
