AEEP Steering Group Meeting

Evidence and Knowledge Integrated Dialogue Thriving Political Dialogue

On June 26, 2025, the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) convened a successful meeting of its Steering Group (SG), reaffirming the commitment of African and European partners to collaborative action on sustainable energy access, transition, and investment. The meeting brought together representatives from the African Union Commission (AUC), the European Union Delegation to the African Union (EUD), Member States, and key implementing partners to assess progress, align on next steps, and…

Held under the co-chairmanship of the AUC and the EU Delegation to the AU, the SG meeting served as a key milestone in the partnership’s 2025 roadmap. Opening remarks underlined the enduring importance of AU-EU energy cooperation amid global geopolitical shifts, particularly as 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of the AU-EU partnership.

One of the core outcomes of the meeting was the approval of the updated governance structure and operational guidelines for the Steering Group. These updates reflect the evolving role of the AEEP and the need for transparent coordination across all levels of the partnership. SG members endorsed the operational guidelines as a foundational document for inclusive and effective engagement. A calendar was also adopted, confirming three SG meetings annually in April, August, and November.

Participants discussed the upcoming 4th edition of the European Financial Flows to SDG7 in Africa Report. The new edition will offer comparative analysis of investment needs versus actual flows and highlight African financial contributions to energy access. The report aims to serve as a strategic tool for decision-makers and will be published in October 2025.

The Secretariat highlighted several key achievements from the first half of 2025, including high-level dialogues, technical events, and continued support to regional energy initiatives. With growing demand for reliable data and reporting, the Steering Group welcomed the Secretariat’s efforts to produce analytical, action-oriented outputs.

The meeting also encouraged and strategized an early planning and coordination ahead of major events in the second half of the year, such as the Africa Climate Summit, the AU-EU Summit, and COP30. Joint messaging and harmonised communication will be prioritised to strengthen the visibility of African European energy cooperation.

The meeting concluded with a keen sense of shared purpose and continued commitment. Steering Group members thanked the Secretariat for its coordination and reaffirmed their support for AEEP’s work. Looking ahead, SG will continue to guide the partnership’s strategic direction, promote impactful implementation, and advocate for sustained investment in Africa’s energy future.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all Steering Group members and observers for their active participation and support.
