Bonn, Germany – 28 September 2022 – The AEEP Forum 2022 Spotlight summarises the key findings from the AEEP Forum held on the 7th of September 2022. The Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) convened over 650 stakeholders for a virtual event that discussed and reflected on how to realise future energy systems in Africa and Europe that will allow human prosperity in a climate-compatible way.

The AEEP Forum comes ahead of the 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) to be hosted in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, in November 2022. During the half-day event, a broad range of representatives from the public and private sectors highlighted the importance of a strong partnership between Africa and Europe, considering the specific challenges of both continents.

Speakers emphasised the value of an African and European partnership of equals to aid the energy transitions on both continents. Africa and Europe must, however, also approach the energy transitions from their unique perspectives considering available funding, resources, and their respective levels of development. The discussion at the AEEP Forum also emphasised the many possible options of bi-continental alignment of joint agendas ahead of COP27. Finance, renewable energy, interconnected grids, and green hydrogen, were all pointed out as important building blocs for just energy transitions.
