AEEP Energy Talks – Achieving SDG7 in Africa – The 2021 AEEP Report: European Financial Flows on SDG7 to Africa

Knowledge Facilitation Thriving Political Dialogue

On 29 September 2021, 14.00 – 15.45 (CEST) the sixth AEEP Energy Talks will dive into the 2021 AEEP Report: European Financial Flows on SDG7 to Africa. Key findings will be presented and discussed with a range of African and European energy experts, and connecting insights from the report with the outcomes of the UN High-level Dialogue on Energy.

The European Financial Flows on SDG7 to Africa report, commissioned by the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) shows that achieving SDG7 is possible. Merely avoiding the economic losses from electricity outages in Africa would free up the funds required to provide access to sustainable energy services to all of Africa´s citizens. Annual additional funding of EUR 69 billion is required to meet this challenge – a significant but not insurmountable investment, given that it equals just 3.1% of African GDP and a mere 0.5% of European GDP.

The AEEP’s report also highlights the strong commitment of African governments, European partners and other key players in the international community to reach this important goal by 2030. To ensure that goals become reality, the report concludes that enhanced co-operation in combination with increased ODA spending, private investments and a substantial increase in African SDG7-compliant national government spending is needed. These key findings will be presented in more detail by research analyst Marc Howard from Cross-border Information (CbI).

On 24 September the UN High-level Dialogue on Energy will take place during the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The aim is to accelerate SDG7 action to support the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change. The event is a historic opportunity for the international community to act: it is the first inclusive global gathering on energy under the auspices of the General Assembly since the UN Conference on New and Renewable Sources of Energy, which was held in Nairobi 40 years ago. During the AEEP Energy Talks Dr Alexander Kauer, from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development BMZ (tbc) and a representative from the Ministry of Energy Kenya will talk about what the UN High-level Dialogue on Energy means for the future of African-European energy collaboration and how they would like to support this as global energy champions.

Opening remarks will be delivered by Mr Atef Marzouk, Acting Director Infrastructure and Energy, African Union Commission (AUC) and Mr Stefano Signore, Head of Unit, DG INTPA F1, European Commission (EC). During the second half of the webinar the results of the European Financial Flows on SDG7 to Africa report and outcomes of the UN High-level Dialogue on Energy will be discussed by a panel consisting of:

Mr Rashid Ali Abdallah, Executive Director, African Energy Commission (AFREC)

Dr Towela Nyirenda-Jere, Head of Economic Integration, AUDA-NEPAD

Dr Alexander Kauer, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development Germany

The September edition of the AEEP Energy Talks will be moderated by Mr Johan van den Berg, Head of Secretariat, Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP).
