AEEP Energy Talks Spotlight: From ACS2 to COP30 – Advancing Africa–EU Cooperation Through Actionable Outcomes
The 21st AEEP Energy Talks, held on 5 November 2025, unpacked the outcomes of the Second Africa Climate Summit (ACS2) and explored how these can translate into concrete results ahead of COP30. The discussion convened experts from Africa and Europe to examine how political commitments made in Addis Ababa can drive practical measures in energy access, climate finance, green industrialisation, and just transition pathways.
Speakers emphasised that ACS2 has created strong momentum for Africa’s climate and energy agenda. Central to the dialogue was the need for African countries to present a unified position at COP30, ensuring they can influence decisions and secure equitable outcomes.
Panelists underscored that translating ACS2 commitments into tangible results requires aligning continental strategies such as the African Single Electricity Market, Mission 300, the Africa Green Minerals Strategy, and the African Green Energy Initiative. They emphasised the importance of coordinated governance involving regional economic communities, streamlined resource mobilisation, and increased accountability around implementation.
A key message for the Africa–EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) was the need to focus on ambitious and actionable measures that support Africa’s priorities ahead of COP30. These include Africa’s engagement in carbon market harmonisation processes, expanding trade in energy and energy-intensive goods, and leveraging Africa’s critical raw materials to strengthen negotiation power.
The session concluded with a shared commitment to deepen Africa–EU cooperation, enhance alignment across national and regional levels, and promote inclusive approaches that reflect the needs of women, youth, and energy-poor communities.
